The Australian Rugby League Commission has given their blessing to add a 17th team to the NRL’s next season, potentially moving it from Brisbane as soon as June. The addition would bring another team into competition at an estimated cost of AUS$ 12 million from league distribution funds.
Nine could potentially show interest in an NRL expansion as they look to extend their free-to-air television rights deal beyond 2022.
Although some NRL teams have struggled in the past, the future looks bright for the league. The NRL has long sought to expand competition and recently agreed to fast-track plans for additional NRLW teams.
Women’s rugby league has seen a resurgence over the last few years. A report released by the NRL recently indicated that more NRLW teams may be on their way and “extra marquee deals to lure athletes from rival codes” will be an important focus during the coming 18 months.
