PlayStation DualSense Wireless Controller – Midnight Black

PlayStation DualSense Wireless Controller Overview

The PlayStation 4 introduces a new kind of controller, one that adds another layer of immersion. Sony calls it “Dual-Sensing” technology, and it basically involves placing a second array of four touch sensors on the backside of the controller. This allows for finer control in games that utilize its features; for example, you can feel even more precise shots with rifles or bows and arrows when you can detect how hard you’re gripping your controller (pressing lightly will make aim easier). It also means all future PS4 controllers will be compatible with any game made before now — as long as developers use Dual-Sensing in their games, you’ll feel it.

The DualShock 4 is also more ergonomic than previous controllers, which is perfect for long play sessions. It’s still a PlayStation controller though, so if you’re not used to the way Playstation buttons are laid out, your hands might get tired after a while. Jokes aside though, the DualShock 4 is definitely PlayStation’s best controller yet — even 10 years down the line I doubt we’ll see another one with this much style and functionality.

Once again Sony has left no aspect of sound untouched by its engineers to deliver an immersive experience that draws gamers into their favorite titles like never before. The highly sensitive six-axis sensor allows developers to create realistic motions and discover new ways to implement them into gameplay, while the built-in vibration motors give off a powerful rumbling effect that enhances every action you perform.

What is the difference between DualShock and DualSense?

What is different about DualSense?

On top of the new touch sensors on the back side of the remote, it also features motion-sensing technology; using an internal gyroscope it can detect how fast or slow you flick your wrist (or any other movement) now allowing for more precise movements in various games like first person shooters like Killzone Shadow Fall (shown below). While this may not seem like a big deal, it could be the difference between life and death in intense battles.

Both types of DualShock 4 controller will come with every PlayStation 4, and once again Sony has kept to its traditional colors: red and black. The price is $60 for either version, but we’ll have to wait until the console’s launch for that information to be revealed. If you want an official DualShock 4 charging stand or charge station though (seen below) those will cost extra — oddly enough they’re also made by Sony, so make sure you get the one you like best since it won’t match your PlayStation 4!

What other games can be played using touch sensors?

While these touch sensors are meant to be used with Dual-Sensing games, you can also feel the vibration effects from any of the PS4’s titles. In Killzone: Shadow Fall for example, you can tap your fingers on a certain part of a wall to move a little spider bot that sticks to it. Or if you’re low on ammo and have a grenade handy, just tilt the controller a bit and press down on the touch pad — this will cause you to pull out the pin which will eventually explode as soon as its timer runs out.

Sony has definitely left no aspect of sound untouched by its engineers to deliver an immersive experience that draws gamers into their favorite titles like never before. The new HD headset included with every PlayStation 4 also uses these touch sensors in order to give gamers the option to navigate through its menus — players can slide their finger vertically or horizontally across the touch pad in order to select an option, and then tap it to confirm.

The same goes for other features like turning up or down the volume; just do a quick swipe left or right and you’ll feel the vibration as your newly adjusted setting is confirmed (you should also be able to hear it!)

As far as first-person shooters go, I’ve yet to see one that uses this new technology (I’m sure there are some though). PlayStation 4 exclusive games like Killzone: Shadow Fall make use of DualShock 4’s touch sensors however, as mentioned above. Sony has also said developers will eventually release other titles like these as well, so once they make it to market I’ll let you all know.

Touch Sensitive Buttons

The PlayStation 4 controller features some new buttons on its design including a re-positioned share button (that now sits between the options and PS home/select buttons on the center of the controller), start and select buttons that are made with touch sensitive areas, two elongated triggers for each hand, and an optional Touch Pad in which you can use your thumb to navigate menus or swipe through various images. you might recognize this technology from Apple’s Macbooks.

Additionally, there is a “light bar” at the top of DualShock 4 which projects light onto the surface below. This allows game developers to create special effects like recreating life bars and adding positional information for where you are in the game (for example, if your character is at risk of dying). As with other features on DualShock 4 such as force feedback and motion-sensing technology, this light bar will only activate when needed — it isn’t constantly lit up like a flashlight. You can also set it to glow different colors depending on which player you are using it with; blue, green, red and pink options will be available.

Much like its predecessors however, this new controller also uses two “vibration” motors: one for each hand. These won’t always come into play since different games utilize them differently, but expect to feel the rumble every time an explosion goes off or something careens into you during an intense driving sequence.

What about the triggers?

The trigger buttons have been elongated to accommodate for their new use as two mini-sticks. In addition to the rumble motor you’ll also feel these triggers also vibrate as they are used which can help you gain a better sense of how tight your aim is; if you’re using this controller to play an FPS game or even Killzone: Shadow Fall, for example, it may be hard to tell how much your reticle is moving as you squeeze the trigger. In this scenario, using both vibration motors can help you determine how much you need to adjust your aim before firing.

For those of you who like playing racing games or action-adventures, DualShock 4’s new longer triggers provide more control over your character’s movements. For example, instead of having to hold down the trigger button in order to sprint, you can slide your finger along the trigger in order to slowly build up that speed.

In case you’re curious, there is one DualShock 4 button that I haven’t gone over yet: the PS home/select/analog button. It’s still there, but it has been moved to the top of the controller. It sits above the touch-sensitive buttons on this model which I’m sure some of you were curious about as well.

Also, as a heads up: depending on which hand you prefer to use, the button layout may be a bit different. For example, if you’re a lefty your “start” and “select” buttons may be switched. The analog sticks also include a rubberized coating that prevents slipping from sweaty hands and it can be pulled out to make room for a Sony-made PS4 camera.
